The implications of this is that there is a virtual layer between all host OS and hardware resources and the container host process. It's largely invisible to you, which makes it really handy. It then issues commands to the Docker engine running within that VM from your desktop software and tooling. Since the host (Mac or Windows) lacks a functional Linux kernel, Docker Desktop actually runs a virtual machine that is a purpose built Linux distro.
